For as long as we are living on this blue planet, our mortality has been the front in the long lists of our woes. In every culture, people have attempted to cheat death. One of the famous examples include King Qin Shi Huang, the King of Chinese state Qin, who ordered his alchemists to prepare an elixir of life. What they gave him was a handful of pills containing mercury and the king died after consuming them.

We might have to find Bowl of Hygeia for a long lasting life but that is not practical. Scientists have studied that since aging is inevitable, one can delay it with a sound mind in a sound body. How can one have a sound mind in a sound body? The answer to this is simple. Healthy diet and a healthy lifestyle can increase the life span up to 20 years. In order to have a deeper look into this we must know what causes aging.

Causes of Aging

Multiple factors contribute towards aging.

  • Aging of cells of an individual is programed into its genetic material. The old cells are continuously replaced by the newer cells and there is a preset possible number of rejuvenation for a cell.
  • A large number of chemical reactions taking place inside the cells results in the production of free radicals. These free radicals causes the cells of the body to break down in the presence of oxygen.
  • With the passage of time, the immune system of our body wears out and the body becomes more prone to the infections.


Anti-Aging Foods

Following are some foods that can delay signs of aging.

  • Pomegranates

The juice in pomegranate seeds is loaded with ellagic acid and punicalagin. The former fights the damage caused by the free radicals and the latter is a super nutritive that helps to conserve collagen in our body. Collagen makes the skin smooth and radiant.

  • Olive Oil

The anti-aging properties of the olive oil are due to the presence of polyphenols and oleic acids in it. Olive oil softens the skin and helps it to retain moisture. On the other hand the fatty acids and vitamins in the olive oil helps to reduce the wrinkles.

  • Blueberries

These little blue wonders contain anti-oxidants more than any other food does. They repair the damage aging does to the brain. They help to maintain the cardiovascular health thus helps to prevent hypertension and diabetes.

  • Nuts

Similar to the olive oil, nuts contain a variety of fatty acids and vitamins that helps to delay signs of aging.

  • Green Vegetables

Vegetables such as spinach and kale are enriched with anti-oxidants and polynutrients that guard the body against the sun damage. Spinach contains beta-carotene and lutein that improves the skin’s elasticity.

  • Fish

Fishes contain Omega 3 fatty acids that benefits the body in a number of ways. . Omega 3 helps to improve the oxidative stress and lipid profiles. These fatty acids work together to improve the cardiovascular functioning of the body and in high doses they work to lower the fatal heart attacks. They also decrease the chances of auto-immune diseases.

  • Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits including oranges, grapes and lemons are loaded with Vitamin C. This powerful vitamin fights off the harmful free-radicals that can cause damage to the skin. They also help in reducing age spots, wrinkles and to lessen shaggy skin.
